The International Space Station (ISS) is a multinational collaborative project involving multiple countries, including the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada. It serves as a microgravity research laboratory where scientific research is conducted in astrobiology, astronomy, meteorology, physics, and other fields.
The ISS was launched into orbit in 1998 and has been continuously inhabited by astronauts since November 2000. It orbits the Earth at an average altitude of approximately 420 kilometers (260 miles) and travels at a speed of about 28,000 kilometers per hour (17,500 miles per hour).
The ISS is made up of multiple interconnected modules, solar panels for capturing energy from the sun, and various scientific instruments and equipment. The space station has a living and working space of about 388 cubic meters (13,696 cubic feet), roughly the size of a five-bedroom house.
Regular crew rotations are carried out to maintain a continuous presence on the ISS, with astronauts typically spending six months on board before returning to Earth. The ISS serves as a valuable platform for conducting research in a microgravity environment and testing technologies that will be crucial for future human space exploration missions to destinations such as Mars.
